RTL: Surprising Sharks

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Book Title: Surprising Sharks: Read and Wonder
Author: Nicola Davies
Islamically Appropriate?: Yes
Genre: Non-Fiction
Book Format: Picture Book
Age Group: 5 years and older
Book Review: This non-fiction book on sharks teaches children an impressively large amount of information about sharks without overwhelming them. The writing style is light and funny which may help connect children to the text easily and quickly. The illustrations in the book are colourful with just the right amount of scariness (but not too scary insha'Allaah) that children expect when they hear the word shark. By the end of the book your students and/or children may find that their view of sharks has changed.

If you use KWL charts in your classroom, this book is written in a format that works well with KWL charts (view sample here insha'Allaah).

This book may also be a nice book to add to your classroom library for the point in the year when you study ocean animals and habitats and your students engage in a bit of independent research. A note of caution: On page 10 when the author is discussing the Lantern Shark, she says the sharks have built-in fairy lights. When reading this book aloud to children skip the word fairy and perhaps use "light bulbs" or another similar word. If you purchase this copy for your classroom, it is easy to simply black this word out or use a piece of green construction paper to conceal it (the page is green).

The author of Surprising Sharks is a zoologist and has many other books published in this same series (Read and Wonder). I hope to review her other books and share them here with you insha'Allaah.

Until the next read insha'Allaah....

RTL: One Blue Fish

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Book Title: One Blue Fish
Author: Charles Reasoner
Islamically Appropriate?: Yes
Genre: Fiction
Book Format: Picture Book
Age Group: 2-5 years old
Book Review: This is a basic counting book that introduces young toddlers to the numbers 1-10. Using pond creatures, the story helps children relate each number in its written form to the quantity it represents with bold colourful pictures. Children see big bold numbers and when they lift the flap, they find the corresponding number of animals under the flap. Young infants and young toddlers in the beginning stages of learning numbers may enjoy this book...waallaahu a'lam.
